American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis) is a large, sprawling native shrub reaching up to 12' tall. It produces large clusters of dark berries in late summer (typically early September). Fruit are used to make syrups, medicines, wines, and preserves. Elderflower cordials make a wonderful summer drink.
