Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) is a medium sized native shrub with glossy dark green leaves that turn red in autumn. Once mature, white spring flowers result in an abundance of black berries in late summer through fall, many of which persist into winter and provide food for wildlife. The berries can also be used for wine and jams.
Seed orders combined with bare root trees/shrubs are shipped at the same time (November for fall orders, April/May for winter orders). Seed-only orders are shipped within 2 business days.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Part Shade
Seed Source(s): New Brunswick
Collection Year: 2021
Hardiness (Canada): 4 [What is my hardiness zone?]
Seed Storage: Refrigerate dry seeds in plastic bag for long term storage.
Germination Instructions: Aronia requires cold stratification for germination.
Soak stored seeds in water for 24 hours, then drain and mix them with slightly moist peat moss and store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for 60-90 days.
Alternatively they can be direct sown outdoors in the fall where nature performs the cold stratification for you. This option requires more protection from rodents and other creatures!
